Children's Drawing Classes

All kindergarten and elementary-aged students are required to take beginner and intermediate drawing classes as a prerequisite to all other classes. Skills learned in these foundation classes are essential to the Artsplace program. Our children’s drawing curriculum is as follows:

Beginner Drawing 
Includes contour line, flat color, texture, mirror image, negative space and volume drawing. Media are Flair pens and markers.            
Intermediate I Drawing 
Reinforces beginner concepts with more detailed projects. (Prerequisite: Beginner Drawing)
Intermediate II Drawing 
Introduces shading and volume drawing. (Prerequisite: Intermediate I Drawing)
Advanced Drawing 
Includes perspective and shading, and introduces different media. (Prerequisite: Intermediate II Drawing)

Children's Specialty Classes

Basics of Painting Class
Learn the basic techniques of color mixing and genres of painting. Class will cover still life’s, landscapes, abstract and portraits.
Comedy Improvisation Class
Are you ready to play outrageous characters in hilarious scenes? This improv comedy course will teach you the skills to create scenes with no rehearsal! Students will make each other laugh in a fun, supportive atmosphere while learning the basics of improv comedy. This class boosts self-confidence and quick-thinking skills. It will culminate in a performance for families.

Comic Book and Video Game Art Class
Venture into a world of excitement, action and imagination as we explore character design, sequential art, story building and world building.
Experiment with Mixed Media Class
Inspired by children’s literature, students will create collages, puppets, fish kites, penguins, stampings and more from all kinds of things: paper, foil, tissue, ribbons, model magic, paper bags, yarn and household junk!     
Make Cool 3-D Creations Class
Learn to make 3-D forms from materials such as newspaper, foil, tape, tissue, glue, recycled stuff, etc. Create sea creatures, dragons and abstract sculptures in this fun class. Bring your imagination.
Manga/Anime Class
Work in black and white with pencil or pen & ink to create animé-style characters before you delve into color. Develop confidence in figure drawing by working on your own project. Independent study is encouraged.

Multi-Cultural Mixed Media Class
Explore cultures, traditions and customs from India, Africa and Ireland with projects including mask making, Rangoli, felted sheep and more.
Musical Theatre Class (Grades 1-3)
This class is for beginning singers who have a love for Musical Theatre. We will focus on selections from Disney musicals such as “Beauty and the Beast”, “The Lion King”, “Peter Pan” and more. Program will culminate in a performance of selections from shows.
Musical Theatre Class (Grades 4-9)
This class is for singers who have a love for Musical Theatre. We will focus on musicals selections from the 1950s - 1970s such as “Grease”, “Bye Bye Birdie”, “Funny Girl” and “West Side Story”. Program will culminate in a performance of selections from shows.
Stuff You Can't Do at Home Class
 Learn a new technique each week (plaster, glue guns, wood burning, etc.) that requires space and is frequently messy. Create incredible art!

Winter Fun Clay Class
Create a winter scene filled with penguins, winter wolves, snowshoe rabbits, owls, Eskimos, reindeer and cardinals using colorful Sculpey clay.
