Animation / Cartooning Workshops

Basics of Animation Workshop (Grades 5-8)
Students will study the 12 basic principles of 2-D traditional animation. As aspiring animators, they will learn animation concepts and techniques to develop film footage of their animated projects. This course is for mature students who will take time perfecting their art. Bring an iPad or tablet.
Cartooning Workshop (Grades 4-8)
Learn the basics of cartooning for all skill levels. Experiment with different mediums and learn about clarity and simplification to develop your own cartoon.
Character Design Workshop (Grades 6-10)
Students will learn how to make characters memorable through line work and color and also how to draw the characters from multiple angles. Bring a smartphone.
Comics Workshop (Grades 4-8)
Learn how to tell a clear and effective story using a three-act structure. Topics covered include panel composition, panel transitions, word balloon placement and sound effects.
Teen Illustration Workshop (Grades 9-12)
This workshop is for students with intentions of study in illustration, animation or pre-production. It will consist of writing and drawing exercises to complete a portfolio of character sheets, turnarounds, storyboards, show and episode synopsis. Bring laptops/tablets if possible.

Colored Pencil Workshop

Beginner Colored Pencil Workshop                            
Try it - you’ll like it! Learn to layer and shade with prismacolor colored pencils to give dimension to your art. This short workshop will give you the opportunity to try colored pencils and will give you a jump-start for the fall Beginner Colored Pencil class.

Drawing Workshops

Contrast Drawing Workshop        
Confidently create a stunning contrast of light and dark values in this workshop. The image, rendered in white charcoal on black paper, produces an amazing piece of art. All levels welcome. Bring a bag lunch.

Drawing a Face Workshop        
Learn how to draw and shade a realistic face in this two day workshop using graphite pencil. Develop skills in a relaxing atmosphere to personally advance your art. Bring a bag lunch.

Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain Workshop        
Learn “to see" in a new way in this fun class with techniques to shift from our analytical left brain side to the more creative and artistic right brain. These techniques will trick your left brain to "let go", allowing focus and development of perception, edges, spaces, light, shadow and relationship of objects.
Nature Sketching Workshop         
Learn to draw a selection of objects such as shells, driftwood, leaves, seedpods and feathers by close and careful observation. Students will use pencil or graphite. All levels welcome. Bring a bag lunch.
Scratch Art Workshop         
Learn to create the illusion of 3 dimensional form with the technique of scratch art. This is not your elementary school scratch art, but a method that enables you to render light and shade in the genre of realism. You'll create an 8"x10" still life of two simple objects. Some drawing experience helpful.

Skulls and Bones Workshop         
Through close and careful observation learn to see the beauty in animal skulls and bones. Different styles of drawing will be encouraged, including gestural. Practice shading and texture techniques and take home one or more sensitively rendered drawings. All levels welcome. Bring a bag lunch.

Glass Workshops

Beginner Stained Glass Workshop
This beginning course will teach you the basic steps of cutting, grinding, foiling and soldering your very own stained glass project. Students will create a sun catcher from a colorful choice of glass to take home and hang.

Moravian Star Workshop
Learn the basic techniques for cutting glass and assembling this intricate Moravian star ornament. 3D hanging stars make great gifts all year round.

Mosaics Workshop
Learn how to cut glass using mosaic wheel cutters, adhere glass and grout your finished product of a 6" terra cotta pot or a 4"x4" coaster.

Multi-Media Workshops

Express Yourself with Clothing Workshop (Grades 6-12)                                
Up-cycle your clothing into something new to fit your personality. No previous sewing skills necessary. Learn how to sew, fit and accessorize to compliment and express your creative self. Extra garments and fabrics available or bring yours. *If you have a portable sewing machine please bring. 
Stuff You Can't Do at Home Workshop (Grades 4-8)                                
Learn exciting and various new techniques each class to create incredible art! Students will work with unique materials to produce creative and unusual artwork. If tried at home, these would require space and are frequently messy.
Summer Floral Silk Scarf Workshop
Natural dyes are used on a wet silk hankie to practice before dying the silk scarf. Process results in unique backgrounds for each student. Patterns may be placed under the scarf as a guide for silk paint embellishments. No experience necessary. Bring a bag lunch.

Tell Your Own Story Workshop (Grades 5-7)                                
After students complete the creation of bound books from cardboard, fabric, paper, and sewing kits, they will then write and illustrate their own books! Students are encouraged to bring an object to use for drawing and writing to base their stories on.

Color & Music Workshop
Expand your color sense and acrylic painting ideas in this unique art and musical environment. You will assemble one-of-a-kind color palettes as inspired by carefully chosen music. This total art experience will awaken your creativity and likely spark new ideas.

Dip Your toes into some sun and sand! Enjoy painting a sandy path lined with beach grass. Learn painting techniques including values, color, and getting that authentic speckle of sand.

Pastel Workshops

Plein Air Pastel I Workshop
En plein air is a French expression that means “in the open air.” Painting outdoors to capture landscapes in the natural light has been a popular practice for centuries. All levels of artists are invited to practice the atmospheric techniques to complete an intriguing pastel landscape.
Plein Air Pastel II Workshop
Painting outdoors lends itself to freshness on the paper. Students will learn the skills necessary “to see” and capture clouds and trees in this pastel workshop for all levels.  Bring a bag lunch.
