Acrylic Painting

Acrylics are a fun, water soluble medium with instant results and easy clean-up. Students will learn through easy exercises, gaining confidence in color mixing. They will play with texture through experimentation with brush types. Painting simple shapes will teach an understanding of how light and dark values make the shapes look realistic. Composition planning will be explained, as well as terms such as scumbling, dry brush, glazing and wet-into-wet painting. This beginner class is perfect for those with little or no experience. Let your memory and imagination inspire you as you create beautiful landscapes. Will graciously shares the techniques which allow him to paint from his imagination and memories. You too will learn to achieve an atmospheric style that captures the essence, beauty and emotion of the landscape. Day one begins with a brief lecture and demonstration, and then we launch into a full day of painting. Day two will consist of starting new works as well as finishing up the previous day’s work, with guidance and instruction from Will on both days. The class fee includes most everything you need – paints, canvases, and other supplies. A few days before the workshop starts, a video will be sent to you to get you prepared. (Adults) (2 days)

This class is an opportunity to learn about landscape drawing, observation and seeing the subject in both traditional and new ways. Different concepts will be introduced and explored each week, including the foundational skills of value, texture, perspective, and composition. There will be plenty of guidance for each student from the instructor. This class is for beginner to intermediate students. (Adults) (5 weeks)

New students will develop skill in layering and blending colors smoothly. Using these skills, they will then create a finished picture of a pear that will look professional. Returning students will continue to work on their own compositions. The instructor will help with more advanced techniques in creating show-worthy art. All students will use Artist quality Prismacolor wax based colored pencils and artist quality Stonehenge paper. (Adults & Teens) (6 weeks) No Class: 10/10

This workshop welcomes artists of all skill levels to the expressive qualities of rich sanguine pencil through a drapery study of curtains. Students will explore foundational techniques in sketching and shading to build their understanding of depth, lighting, and proportions of a sheer curtain. Students will work with toned tan paper and red sanguine pencils to explore warmth and mood in composition. (Teens/Adults) (1 day)

Explore the many joys and challenges of painting with watercolor. Each week will include a short demo to get us warmed up and instructor suggestions for paintings which may span more than one class. Students may bring their own reference or simply choose to work from the provided ideas. Whether you are new to this medium or just want to dedicate time during your week to practice and improve your skill, this class offers something for you. Join me while we explore a variety of techniques and subjects. Students will be encouraged to work on composition and values as well as color mixing and water control. We will mainly focus on landscapes, but this will vary depending upon class input and interests. So come and join us for a bit of escape, fun and play with this magical medium. (Adults) (6 weeks)

Explore drawing as a tool for personal expression rather than observation. Through guided prompts, participants will use memory, sensation, movement, and imagination as starting points for creating expressive images. Working with charcoal and mixed media, students will experiment with mark-making, shape, value, and composition to develop drawings that communicate mood, energy, and experience. Discover the playful and creative potential of Gelli plate printing in this introductory 2-day workshop. In the first class, participants will design and customize their own stencils from a variety of textured materials and learn inking and layering techniques to build rich, multi-colored images. The second class will cover using photo transfers and more layering techniques. Open to all experience levels. No prior printing experience is necessary. (2 days)

Discover the playful and creative potential of Gelli plate printmaking. This class will cover the essentials of caring for and printing with gel plates. Techniques including using and making stencils, photo transfers, layering colors, and how to combine gel prints for creating collages. We will also begin class by making our own gel plates, which students may take home at the end of the session. Open to all experience levels. No prior printmaking experience is necessary. Overcome the mysteries of the sewing machine and discover how fun and easy it can be! Learn the basics of machine sewing including threading, operating and troubleshooting. Practice using the machine and then move on to simple projects for yourself or for gift-giving. Learn how to choose, cut, and piece together fabric to create a coaster, shoulder or tote bags, and a zippered pouch. Previous students are welcome to attend and work on their own projects. Mah Jong is a fascinating, rummy-like game played with tiles rather than cards. It originated in China and is enjoying a resurgence in popularity with players around the state. This class will allow you to become familiar with the elementary principles of the game in a supportive and positive class experience. You'll get playing in no time! In this class taught by Rick Ciaburri, students will be introduced to the photographic process through hands-on practice with DSLR or mirrorless cameras. Students will learn how to better operate their cameras, shutter speeds, f-stops, depth-of-field and composition. Break into image processing with Adobe Lightroom, take photography "field trips" around the historical Ball & Socket Arts campus and Farmington Canal Trail, and gain a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of photography. Students must provide their own DSLR or mirrorless camera, as well as a laptop with Adobe Lightroom or an equivalent software installed. (Adults) (6 weeks)
