Colored Pencil Classes

Beginner/Intermediate Colored Pencil
Explore the amazing techniques in colored pencil that will give your artwork the rich look of paint. You will begin with value exercises and basic layering techniques that will serve as a foundation for more advanced work. While prior drawing experience will enhance your study of colored pencil, it is not necessary. The instructor will lead you through easy techniques for laying out your images.
Intermediate Colored Pencil (Prerequisite: Beginner Colored Pencil or instructor approval)
Develop your layering and drawing skills as you begin work on independent projects. You will begin exploring color theory, advance your knowledge of color choices and learn more tips and techniques for working in this versatile medium.

Drawing Classes

Drawing from Observation
Practice drawing freehand from direct observation. The teacher will provide objects and simple exercises to help students learn and practice specific skills. Pencil, graphite sticks, charcoal or conte and washes will be used. This class will provide a foundation in drawing for other mediums.
Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain - Part I (4 weeks)
Learn “to see” in a new way with techniques to shift from our analytical left brain side to the more creative and artistic right brain. These techniques will trick your left brain to “let go”, allowing focus and development of perception, edges, spaces, light, shadow and relationship of objects.
Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain - Part 2 (3 weeks)
Prerequisite: Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain: Part 1 or instructor approval
Continue building the concepts from Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain: Part 1 to further enhance your skills to draw realistically.

I Can’t Draw but I Want to Learn
For students wishing to learn a comprehensive approach and develop a firm foundation in the fundamentals of realistic drawing. Learn accurate measurement, alignment, proportion, shading and textures. Expect significant improvement and a bit of homework.

Independent Studio Drawing
Students will work independently, and also one-on-one with instructor guidance and constructive critique to bring artwork to the next level of professionalism. Students should bring photos of their subjects.
Reflections and Shadows
Learn the magic of using light to create shadows in still life. With black pencil, students will work with surfaces that shine and those that absorb light (such as burlap) as well as those allowing light to pass through (crystal). Reward yourself and bring new vitality to your art after completing this class for all levels.
Sgraffito (5 weeks)
This class will introduce techniques used to create realistic images of landscapes or animals on black scratchboard. Using an exacto blade, students will do a subtractive drawing from reference photos. Emphasis will be on form, texture, light and dark contrast. Intermediate drawing experience recommended.
