Teaches: Acrylics; Pastels
Mally DeSomma’s life as an artist spans over thirty-five years, always searching for an interesting subject to capture on canvas. She considers herself lucky to be able to do the jobs she loves the most; to paint and to teach.
Through years of college courses, private instruction, and numerous workshops with many renowned artists, she has enjoyed and reaped many rewards throughout her career as an artist. For over twenty years Mally has taught pastels, acrylics, and oils to adults and children at Artsplace, a private art school in Cheshire, Connecticut and is now one of the anchor teachers there. Mally has also taught oils and pastels at the University of Connecticut Waterbury campus and privately in her own studio in Waterbury, Connecticut.
Among other commitments and accomplishments, Mally serves on the board of the Fine Line Art Gallery in Woodbury, Connecticut. Since 2008 she has served as chairperson of the Connecticut Pastel Society’s national juried art show, “Renaissance in Pastel” at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, Connecticut. She has received numerous commissions for figures, animals, and still life, has designed specialty cards for businesses and individuals, and has done artwork for catalog companies. Winner of many awards in juried art shows, Mally had won a top award at the 2009 national “Pastel Society of America” show in New York City. The award winning painting was chosen to be displayed January through March 2010 at The Butler Institute Museum in Ohio. In 2012 Mally has won a top award in the national “Allied Artists of America” show in New York City. Mally also founded and directs the Fall Gathering of Artists in Litchfield, Connecticut. The show boasts over 40 of the area’s top artists and has run successfully for the past 10 years. In April 2009 through 2012, the Palace Theater in Waterbury, Connecticut sought out her expertise in organizing a special art event, Art Forms. Mally gathered 20 award winning artists including herself to show their work. This event enjoyed an enormous success and was scheduled again for April 2013. In 2011 Mally has become a signature member of the Connecticut Pastel Society, and in 2012 has also become a signature member of “The Pastel Society of America.” In 2014 Mally has won “Best in Show” and in 2016 “Best in Pastel” at The Congregational Church Art Show in Roxbury Ct and The CPS Award at The Connecticut Pastel Society spring show.
