Children's Drawing Classes

All kindergarten and elementary-aged students are required to take beginner and intermediate drawing classes as a prerequisite to some other classes. Skills learned in these foundation classes are essential to the Artsplace program. Our children’s drawing curriculum is as follows:
Beginner Drawing 
Includes contour line, flat color, texture, mirror image, negative space and volume drawing. Media are Flair pens and markers.    
Intermediate Drawing 
Reinforces beginner concepts with more detailed projects including some shading and volume drawing. (Prerequisite: Beginner) 

Advanced Drawing 
Includes perspective and dimensional drawing, and introduces different media. (Prerequisite: Intermediate)

Children's Specialty Classes

Basics of Painting Class
Learn basic color mixing techniques and painting genres. Class will cover still lifes and landscapes using watercolor and acrylic paints.
Cartooning and Comics Class
Learn the basics of cartooning and how it applies to storytelling in comics. Students will learn techniques and concepts applicable to all skill levels. Topics include character design, panel composition, word bubbles, clarity and simplification.

Castles in Clay Class
Using colorful Sculpey clay, students will create a winter wonderland of characters to fill a castle including knights, polar bears and whoever is imagined to rule this icy kingdom.
Cool 3-D Creations Class
Use household items such as newspaper, foil, tape, tissue and cardboard to create wonderful 3-D sea creatures, dragons, and abstract sculptures. Bring your imagination!

Harry Potter and Friends in Clay Class
Using colorful Sculpey clay, students will create favorite characters from the beloved Harry Potter series to fill a diorama of their own. Hone your sculpting skills and create wizards and magical creatures.
Manga/Animé Class
Work in black and white to create animé-style characters before you delve into color. You will develop confidence in figure drawing.

Medley of Media Class
Experiment with different ways of making art - painting, drawing, collage, sculpture and printmaking. Discover what you’re good at and have fun making wonderful creations. No experience needed!

Stuff You Can't Do at Home Class
Learn a new technique each week (plaster, glue guns, wood burning, etc.) that requires space and is frequently messy.
